MEDITATION COURSE

PRANAYAMA COURSE

CLASS TIME:  6:30 - 8am,  Tuesday and Thursday mornings
Dates coming soon...

Pranayama, the practice of ancient yogic breathing techniques, consciously controls the flow of breath, and thus enhances the flow of energy in the body. A regular, balanced pranayama practice increases prana (life energy, or ki” or “chi”), thereby inviting greater mental clarity, heightened healing potential and deeper self- understanding. Pranayama, like other yogic practices, is about being more fully alive and well, and is especially helpful in the preparation for meditation.

Prana, (or ki” or “chi”), refers to a basic, universal, all-pervading life-force Energy long recognized by Eastern thought, which is now being more fully appreciated and studied by Western science. Yoga practitioners over the centuries have found that by practicing Pranayama, or Yogic Breathing, we can access, link to, (yoke to, i.e. “yoga”) this Energy, and harness and utilize its power. Known as the fourth limb of Ashtanga Yoga, it is the gateway to the stilling of agitated prana or energy. When the prana is stilled through pranayama, then your perception will slip into a state that is beyond prana – beyond energy. Such a meditative stillness is known as Spirit. Spirit is beyond all energy and form.

This 1.5-hour/ 5 days Course Intensive, during a 2.5 weeks period, will provide you with practical, step-by-step explanations about, and practice of basic Yogic Breathing techniques including the major Pranayamas and preparations: Uddiyana Bandha, Agni Sar Kriya, Nauli, Kapalabhati, and Anuloma Viloma which you can integrate into your current yoga practice. For optimum benefit, we recommend that you attend all the sessions.

Beginners will get a solid introduction. Intermediates will get concrete, helpful hints that will greatly improve their practice. No yoga experience necessary. Note: you may sit on a chair, yoga cushion or yoga mat for the practice.

In this course, you will:
• learn and practice various pranayama techniques, mudras and kriyas including: Uddiyana Bandha, Agni Sar Kriya, Nauli, Kapalabhati, and Anuloma Viloma and various preparations to concentration.
• learn how to engage the bandhas in your pranayama practice.

When the breath wanders the mind also is unsteady.

But when the breath is calmed the mind too will be still,

and the yogi achieves long life.

Therefore, one should learn to control the breath.

PHILOSOPHY and MEDITATION COURSE

October 24 Tues, 27 Fri, November 10 Fri, 14 Tues, and 21 Tues.

This course is two-fold: with an introduction to Meditation and the Bhagavad Gita.  The meditation technique we will learn is Anapana Sati, the first step in the practice of Vipassana meditation.  Anapana means observation of natural, normal respiration, as it comes in and as it goes out. It is an easy to learn, objective and scientific technique that helps develop concentration of the mind.

The Bhagavad Gita is revered as the quintessence of Vedic wisdom. In this course, we will learn how this profound scripture imparts the universal science of the soul, rendering it an ageless repository of knowledge applicable to all of humanity, transcending the boundaries of time, place, and circumstance. The Gita serves as a guiding life manual, illuminating life's purpose and offering a path to navigate this material world, transcend suffering, and attain lasting freedom and unending joy.

"When I read the Bhagavad-Gita and reflect about how God created this universe everything else seems so superfluous."

- Albert Einstein

"When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day."

- Mahatma Gandhi

When the mind, restrained from material activities, becomes still by the practice of Yoga, then the yogi is able to behold the soul through the purified mind, and he rejoices in the inner joy.  Verse 6.20 Bhagavad Gita
